Moth Morning with Graham Crittenden, County Moth Recorder
27th May 2018 Borgie Cabin
It was a glorious May morning at Borgie Cabin, when we all joined Graham Crittenden the county moth and butterfly recorder for an informal session on moth trapping and identification.
Graham had spent the previous night at the cabin and set up two moth traps to demonstrate the safe capture and release of moths and to show us some sample species.
A number of moths were captured and we were rewarded with a close look at a spectacular Poplar Hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) and a Sallow Kitten (Furcula furcula).
Graham demonstrated how to set up a moth trap and various techniques on transferring moths from the trap to inspection tubes, some more successful than others. Inevitably there is always one that gets away!
We provided ID guides and reference books and invited all who joined us to enjoy morning coffee whilst learning more about these wonderful insects.
Some of the younger participants in the group were very creative and produced some lovely artistic renditions.
Many thanks to Graham for an interesting and very enjoyable morning.
