We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2025 competition
Overall winner of the Abigail Rhodes Trophy and the Open category: ‘Felty Fingers’ by Susan Kirkup
Judge of this year’s Open category, Highlife Highland Countryside Ranger Donald Mitchell, says: “I eventually chose ‘Felty fingers’ as first in the Open group; it may be an invasive interloper, but it looks like a remarkable natural art installation here, so unusual.“
Susan Kirkup (aka Milly Joyce), winner of the Abigail Rhodes Photography Competition 2025:
“This invasive but very photogenic seaweed caught my eye last summer on the beach. I was lucky with the light and the tide.”
Equipment details:
Panasonic G80 with a Lumix G Vario 14-140 lens.

Winner of the Mobile phone category: ‘Painting the Cosmos’ by David Sutherland
Judge’s comments: “I really liked the idea of ‘Painting the Cosmos’ so colourful and radiant; I once painted a picture of a butterfly being painted by an artist whilst surrounded by planets and stars. It was my choice as first.”
Special commendations in the Open Category
Judge’s comments: “I would like to commend the ‘Borgie Lichen Bundle’, as it illustrates creatively and so well the competition for space on a wee twig.”
Judge’s comments: “‘The Egg Thief’ a superb capture of crime in action.”
Judge’s comments: “A brilliant night shot.”
Judge’s comments: “A very rare picture of a rare bird, a special spot this one”.
Special commendations in the Mobile Phone Category
Judge’s comments: “A very summery ‘Summer Wood’, bringing a cheer in the middle of winter, you could feel the canopy sunshine and sense the aromatic woodland.”
Judge’s comments: “A good head and thorax shot, we can’t ignore the bumblebees.”
